What gets secured

• Windows and doors broken by heat or by firefighters gaining entry, boarded with plywood fixed from the inside with through-bolts where possible so the boards cannot be pried off from outside.
• Roof openings, whether burned through or cut by the fire department for ventilation, covered with heavy-gauge tarp battened down against North Texas wind, not just weighted with bricks.
• Structural shoring of sagging ceilings, floors or walls where a collapse risk exists, so the building is safe for the assessment and for the crew.
• Fencing for commercial properties and larger losses where the whole site needs to be controlled.
• Utilities confirmed off or isolated as needed, with the meter status documented.

Why it matters for your claim

Almost every property policy requires you to protect the property from further damage after a loss. If rain comes through an open roof a week after the fire, the insurer can argue that water damage was avoidable and not covered. Prompt board-up, with photographs and a dated invoice, closes that argument before it starts. It is also usually a covered expense in its own right.
